What we often see in people with neck and headache complaints is a decrease in proprioception. Proprioception is a difficult word for the feeling in the body that ensures the correct motor skills and balance. It is also called position sense, so how are you or a certain part of your body in the environment. This sense is reduced in many people with neck and headache complaints and makes that you have less control over the neck and therefore your complaints.
Fortunately, there is something you can do about this! This can be trained, just like many other things and problems in the body. There are several ways to regain control over this. One of them is practicing with a laser pointer. You attach the laser pointer on top of your head (for example with a headband), now the light of the laser pointer moves along with the movements you make with your neck.
The trick is to follow certain lines as precisely as possible with the laser pointer, for example the edge of a painting or the lines in the painting. This is a challenge for your neck, because of the reduced proprioception. Controlling the neck so precisely puts your sense of position in your neck to a test. This is how you train the proprioception of the neck and it can only get better with time.
Do you want to know if you have a loss in your proprioception? We can measure this in our practice, for that it is necessary to drop by.
