Breathing

Head, neck and jaw complaints and ‘wrong’ breathing often occur together. For many people, breathing is something they don’t pay attention to and that happens unconsciously.

Breathing is more than just inhaling and exhaling air. It is a very complex process that affects various aspects of your body, such as your heart rate, blood pressure and digestion.

The way you breathe is also important. Broadly speaking, there are 2 ’types’ of breathing: abdominal breathing and chest breathing. Abdominal breathing is controlled by the diaphragm (diaphragm) and chest breathing is controlled by the auxiliary respiratory muscles.

There are also 2 ways to get air into the lungs: through the mouth (mouth breathing) and through the nose (nasal breathing). Mouth breathing is very often linked to chest breathing and nasal breathing to abdominal breathing.Chest breathing is common when experiencing complaints in the head, neck and jaw area. This can help maintain muscle tone of the head, neck and neck muscles.

For good breathing at rest, it is important that the lips are closed, the tongue is against the roof of the mouth and the molars do not touch each other. This position of the tongue creates a space in the pharynx, making breathing through the nose easier.
