Did you know that one out of four people with tinnitus/ear ringing, the sounds are (partly) caused by the muscles?
Hearing damage is a frequently cited cause. Recently it has been discovered that many tinnitus complaints are related to tension from the muscles in the neck and head area. So tension in the jawmuscles can cause tinnitus.
Let’s explain this: The sounds we hear are processed in the brain. The feeling and tension from the muscles are also recognized in the brain. In a certain area in the brain these systems have some overlap. The brain misinterpret muscle tension for noises and makes a sound out of it.
Through tips and tricks that we as orofacial physiotherapists can give, it is often possible to change the tinnitus.
